GWA Wingfoil World Cup Denmark 2023
Hvide Sande (GMT +2)
03 September – 09 September
Discipline: Surf-Freestyle, FreeFly-Slalom

Day six: Saturday, 9 September, 2023

13.46 That’s it for today. Unfortunately the wind didn’t fill in today. The men’s FreeFly-Slalom results stand. Join us next time in Dakhla, Morocco, for the final stop in Wave.

1 Francesco Cappuzzo
2 Titouan Galea
3 Julien Rattotti

9.20 Good morning from Hvide Sande. We’ve just had the skippers’ meeting. The wind is a light south-easterly breeze that we’re hoping will build in late morning to run more rounds of the men’s FreeFly-Slalom. Right now Francesco Cappuzzo and Titouan Galea are equal on points, but Cappuzzo leads thanks to the tie-break rules. Stay tuned.

Day five: Friday, 8 September, 2023

11.45 That’s it for today. The riders have been released for the day. Galea and Cappuzzo are tied on points, but Cappuzzo has the better score on count backs. We’re hoping for more racing on the last day tomorrow. But the forecast looks marginal. It couldn’t be more finely poised. Let’s see if we get some racing. If not, Cappuzzo would get the event win. The title will still be very much up for grabs at the final stop in Brazil in November.  Just us tomorrow for more FreeFly-Slalom.

11.40 ER10 final 1 F Cappuzzo 2 T Galea 3 Escofet 4 Zorzi 5 Fedit

11.35 ER10 mini-final 1 Y Holste 2 A Gerard 3 Sil Romiejn  4 Malo Guenole 5 L Vuillermet.

11.32 AP flag down. MER9 mini-final. We’ve only got six on the start line for the mini-final.

11.25 The AP flag is up in the committee boat. The wind is down to 7 to 12 knots, with glassy patches and the riders are having difficulty sometimes staying on the foil as we wait for the mini-final of round 9.

11.20 MER10 H2 1 A Fedit 2 A Gerard 3 T Galea 4 M Guenole 5 L Vuillermet

11.15 M ER10 H1 1 Rattotti 2 Cappuzzo 3 May 4 Escofet 5 Zorzi

11.07 The men are going to the water for Round 10. Out on the water we have 8 -12 knots, a south-easterly cross offshore breeze. It’s definitely dropping, but these men can make it work. Nia Suardiaz was using a 6.0m wing earlier. All the girls and men are using harnesses under their lycras.

10.55 M9 Final 1 T Galea 2 F Cappuzzo 3 J Rattotti 4 A Fedit 5 Y Holste.

That puts Galea in the lead by 0.3 of a point over Cappuzzo. We’re now reviewing the conditions and preparing new seeding for round 10. It couldn’t be closer. Galea can win the world title here if he wins the event, but only if Cappuzzo finishes fourth or lower.

Rattotti completes the top three and he’s just over a point adrift of Cappuzzo. Super-tight.

10.51 M9 Mini-final 1 A Gerard 2 S Zorzi 3 B Ramlov 4 Blaesino 5 L Vuillermet

10.45 M9 H2 1 Rattotti 2 Galea 3 Guenole 4 Sosa 5 Nonnot

10.30 M 9 H1 1 F Cappuzzo 2 Escofet 3 Holste 4 May 5 Fedit

10.15 Now Galea and Cappuzzo are both tied for top spot on 13.1pts. Both were able to discard that last score from the final. We have two discards after seven race. Rattotti sits in third spot overall, with that last win.

10.03 M8 Final 1 Rattotti 2 Fedit 3 May 4 Nonnot 5 Guenole. Big drama in that final when leaders Cappuzzo and Galea collided on the start line. Cappuzzo’s mast was badly damaged. He claims Galea came down on him. Galea said that Cappuzzo came up into him. Either way both finished last in that final.

09.55 M8 mini-final 1 Sosa 2 Gerard 3 Vuillermet 4 Juppet 5 Blaesino

09.50 M ER8 H2 1 Cappuzzo 2 May 3 Nonnot 4 Guenole 5 Fedit

09.45 M ER 8 H1 1 Rattotti 2 Galea 3 R Zorzi 4 B Escofet 5 Y Holste.

09.27 W14 1 Suardiaz 2 O Ceris 3 4 Belloeuvre 4 Marchetti 5 V Lippittsch. That’s it. We have just crowned Nia Suardiaz world champion in the FreeFly-Slalom discipline, her second title in less than a week.

09.15 W13 1 Suardiaz 2 Belloeuvre 3 Ceris 4 Behrens 5 Lippitsch

09.00 MER7 final. 1 Cappuzzo 2 Rattotti 3 Galea 4 May 5 A Fedit 6 B Escofet. That’s important as it seems to give Cappuzzo the overall lead as he squeezes in front of  Galea on the leaderboard. But there’s still a way to go in this competition. We’ll aim for more rounds today, probably three or four more to come. There’s also a chance for tomorrow, up to a maximum of 15 rounds.

For the women we’re are going to quit today after 13 rounds. But Nia Suardiaz has won and will be crowned FreeFly-Slalom world champion. That’s back-to-back world titles for the 16-year-old from Tarifa, Spain, after she won the Surf-Freestyle here in Hvide Sande on day one and with it the crown.

08.53 MER7 mini-final. 1 Sosa 2 S Zorzi 3 L Juppet 4 C Hamon 5 J Blaesino

08.50 W12 1 Suardiaz 2 Ceris 3 Belloeuvre 4 Baruzzi 5 Lippitsch

08.45 M ER7 H2 1 F Cappuzzo 2 B Escofet 3 Y Holste 4 L Vuillermet 5 M Guenole 5 A Gerard

08.30 M ER7 H1 1 Rattotti 2 Galea 3 R Zorzi 4 A Fedit 5 Ramlov.

08.22 1 W R11 1 Suardiaz 2 Ceris 3 Belloeuvre 4 Van der Linden 5 Lippitsch

08.10 W ER10 1 Suardiaz 2 Van der Linden 3 Belloeuvre 4 Ceris 5 Lippitsch.

08.02 M ER7 H1 1 A Gerard 2 A Sosa 3 Ramlov 4 Hamon 5 Juppet.

o7.57 W ER9 1 Suardiaz 2 Ceris 3 Belloeuvre 4 Behrens 5 Van der Linden

07.55 M ER6 H2 1 Cappuzzo 2 B Escofet 3 Holste 4 Galea 5 Vuillermet 6 Guenole.

07.35 M ER 6 H1 General recall with four riders over early. Juppet, Blaesino, Sosa, and Puntivero. Back in sequence now.

1 May 2 Rattotti 3 Fedit 4 Zorzi 5 Nonnot

07.30 W ER8 1 Suardiaz 2 Belloeuvre 3 Ceris 4 Behrens 5 Van der Linden.

07.15 Good morning. Another early start here to catch the wind. We’re going to press on with the second day of FreeFly-Slalom. The course has changed today. Its the mirror opposite of the first day, with a port tack start and a pump track that will favour goofy-footed riders. With the women seven races in, we could be crowning our world champion today.

Day four: Thursday, 7 September, 2023

11.35 That’s a a wrap for today. We got through seven rounds of the women with Nia Suardiaz comfortably in the lead. In the men we managed to get through five elimination rounds.

11.20 M ER5 mini-final 1 L Vuillermet 2 A Sosa 3 C Nonnot 4 M Guenole 5 C Hamon.

11.10 M ER 5 Final 1 Galea 2 A Fedit 3 J Rattotti 4 B Escofet 5 F Cappuzzo

09.35 M ER3 H2 1 R Zorzi 2 A Gerard 3 T Galea 4 C MacDonald 5 J Estredo (DSQ) 6 A Sosa 7 Blaesino

09.30 M ER3 H2 Big one there. Alan Fedit, a contender, was disqualified for being over early. That means he can’t make the final and dents his chances of taking the win.

09.23 M ER3 H1 1 Rattotti 2 Harbacek 3 Cappuzzo 4 S Zorzi 5 M Guenole 6 B May.

09.20 W ER 6 1 Suardiaz 2 Ceris 3 B vd Linden

08.45 M ER2 H2 1 F Cappuzzo 2 M Guenole 3 A Sosa 4 A Gerard 5 Sebastian Zorzi 6 Titouan Galea. Galea had a really poor start and was lucky he was able to overtake to squeak into the final.

08.32. M ER2 H1 1 J Rattotti 2 B Escofet 3 Y Holste 3 M May 5 A Fedit

08.00 M mini-final: 1 A Sosa 2 J Rattotti 3 C MacDonald 4 Luca Vuillermet

07.20 Women ER1. 1 Kylie Belloeuvre 2 Nia Suardiaz 3 Orane Ceris 4 Bowien van der Linden. Interesting opening. Suardiaz barely lost a race in her last few events, but loses the first of the day here in Hvide Sande.

07.00 The marks are being laid now. It’s a ten-leg course, with a reaching-upwind-reaching triangle and a pump track. The wind on the course is 7kts to 15kts on the course.

06.30 Good morning from Hvide Sande. The skippers’ meeting is just starting and we’re planning to get the FreeFly-Slalom underway. First up will be two heats of the men. We’re having an early start after two sunny but windless days. The wind forecast is good for the early morning, but fading as the day goes on. So the plan is to use all the available breeze. Sunrise will be soon.

Day three: Wednesday, 6 September, 2023

17.30 The athletes are released for the day. Unfortunately the wind failed to show up. But we’re optimistic for wind and an early start is scheduled for the FreeFly-Slalom competition tomorrow. Join us then.

10.35 Good morning. The skippers’ meeting is on right now. The wind is not looking great right now. We’ve got morning mist and a light offshore breeze. Let’s see what happens. Stay tuned.

Day two: Tuesday, 5 September, 2023

17.30 The wind failed to show up and the riders have been released for the day. Join us tomorrow.

10.57 Good morning. We’ve just had the skippers’ meeting, but today it doesn’t look like we’re going to get any wind to begin the FreeFly-Slalom contest. But the athletes are going to keep themselves busy with a tow-in foil competition. Stay tuned.

Day one: Monday, 4 September, 2023

18.50 That’s a wrap from Hvide Sande, where on day one we crowned two winners in the Surf-Freestyle discipline-one a freshly minted world champion. Join us tomorrow for more action in FreeFly-Slalom.

18.40 Mini-final.C MacDonald v AS Fedit. Fedit wins by a whisker. His wave score was the telling factor in the mini-final that give him third place.

18. 30 Final. M Guenole  v B Escofet. Guenole takes the win and his first victory in the final since Taiba last year. It keeps in in the hunt to retain his Surf-Freestyle title.

17. 45 Men’s Semi-final 2 Malo Guenole v Chris MacDonald. Guenole wins and goes to the final. His wave selection and riding was just superior and was teamed with a massive Frontside 7 sends him forward.

17.40 Men’s Semi-final 1 Bastien Escofet v Alan Fedit. Escofet goes to the final. His wave selection was the telling factor. Even Fedit’s Cork 7 was not enough to claw back the deficit.

17. 35 R6 H3 S Spiessberger v M Guenole / R6H4 A Sosa v C MacDonald. Guenole advances to the semi-final along with MacDonald.

17.30 R6 H1 B Escofet v A Gerard / B Muller v A Fedit. R6 H2 Escofet and Fedit go through to the semi-finals.

16.40 R5 H1 L Juppet v B Escofet. Escofet shows who’s the boss with a big wave and an innovation trick taking his total to 16.50. / R5 H2 R Zorzi v A Gerard. Gerard passes to the next round with a good wave score and a solid trick in the slackening breeze.

16.30 R4 H8 L Harbacek v S Zorzi. Zorzi advances past Harbacek.

16.20 R4 H5 S Spiessberger v N Puntivero. Spiessberger easily takes the win. / R4 H6 C Hamon v J Salmonn. Hamon advances.

14.53 Women’s Final re-run. Bowien van der Linden v Nia Suardiaz. Suardiaz wins in a tight final, just edging out Van der Linden in slightly tricky conditions. Suardiaz takes her first Surf-Freestyle world title, and is very much in the hunt for a FreeFly-Slalom crown, all at the age of 16 with everything still in front of her.

14.32 Women’s mini-final. Orane Ceris v Kylie Belloeuvre. An all-French heat to decide third and fourth place. Then we’ll re-run the Women’s Final again. Ceris takes the mini-final and with it the third place on the podium.

14.19 Women’s final. Bowien van der Linden v Nia Suardiaz. Suardiaz has the chance to take the world title if she can win this one. At the end of the final, the race director took the decision to re-run the final because of interference in the competition by other athletes who were not in the final.

14.04 M R3 H4 Jannik Salmonn v Lillian Juppet v Xavi Corr. Corr advances while the other two fight again.

13.54 W S-F1 Orane Ceris v Bowien van der Linden / W S-F2 Kylie Belloeuvre v Nia Suardiaz. We have both semi-finals in the water as time could run short if the win shuts off again. But now we have 13-14kts. Van der Linden advances to the semi along with Suardiaz.

13.42 M R5 H4 Lasse Harbacek v Alan Fedit. Fedit moves on from that with a big Cork 7 for 7.75 and a strong wave score.

13.32 W R5  Laura Mayer v Nia Suardiaz. Suardiaz goes through to the semi-final landing a big wave score of 6.00.

13.19 Men’s R3 H3 Gollito Estredo v Balz Muller v Ancor Sosa. Three men on the water with one move and one wave to count. Muller goes through while the others will fight it out again. The experience of Muller shines through as he goes forward with two good scores. The waves aren’t huge, but Muller made a few work for him.

13.12 W R5 H3 K Belouvre v V Lippitsch. Belloeuvre advances.

12.54 W R5 H1 Sofia Marchetti v Orane Ceris / R5 H2 Maria Behrens v Bowien van der Linden. Van der Linden advances with a 15.23 heat score, along with Ceris. They both go the semi-finals.

12.52 Red Flag is down. We’re about to go into sequence.

12.30 The wind is back. It turned a little more to the south. We’re close to going into sequence with the women’s R5. We’ll have two heats on the water at the same time so that we can speed up the process in case the wind drops again. Now the heats will be 10 minutes long with six attempts with one wave ride to count and one trick.

10.53 We’re still on hold with the AP flag up. But the wind is turning left a little and there’s an 11.00 call for a FPS at 11.10. Let’s see.

09.03 W R5 H1 Sofia Marchetti v Orane Ceris. The heat was cancelled when the wind dropped out. The AP flag is up for now. Let’s hope it comes back.

08.57 M R3 H2 S Romeijin v C Hamon v A Gerard. Gerard wins and advances with a big 8.30 for a Frontside 7. The others fight again in the next round.

08.28 W R4 H2 M Behrens v K Trautman. Behrens wins with 12.06 and advances.

08.04 Men’s R3 H1 Stefan Spiessberger v Riccardo Zorzi v Bastien Escofet. Escofet wins with a heat total of 20.04.

07.52  W R3 H4 Maria Behrens v Nia Suardiaz. This is a big one for so early in the morning. Suardiaz will be hard to beat. Suardiaz opens her account with a a couple of big tricks. Suardiaz progresses easily with 18.67 total that included a big Frontside 3 for 6.00.

07.35 W R3 H3 Laura Meyer v Sofia Marchetti v Viola Lippitsch. The young Austrian rider Lippitsch goes through to R5 with a good heat total of 9.48. It looks as if the wind has backed off a little as the sun has come up. The long strand here at Hvide Sande (White Sand) is stunning in the early morning light as it reflect off he small breakers.

07.12 W R3 H2 Charlotte Baruzzi v Bowien van der Linden. Van der Linden goes through. But it wasn’t a high-scoring heat. Her 4.63 for Toeside trick was just enough to see her advance.

07.00 Women’s Surf-Freestyle R3 H1 Katarzyna Trautman v Kylie Belouvre v Orane Ceris. Red flag is up and we’re in sequence. We’ll have 7-minute heats with 2-minute transition. Ceris opens with a big Back Flip for 7.83. She clearly means business as the sun rising finally hits the water. It is early, like I said. Ceris takes the heat with a total of 14.66. Belouvre and Trautman live to fight again in round four.

06.40 Good morning from Hvide Sande. We’re here for an early start. The skippers’ meeting is on now and the plan is to start with the women’s Surf-Freestyle and eventually progress to the men’s Surf-Freestyle. The early start is because the wind forecast for the next five days looks difficult. But today is good. We have a decent onshore breeze right now, so hopefully it stays and builds. There’s a chance we could crown our Surf-Freestyle world champions today. Stay tuned.
