Livestream Action on now – GWA Wingfoil World Cup Lanzarote – Day One

Wind and waves are on the cards for the GWA World Cup here in Lanzarote

Wednesday 6th July 2022
Words: Liam Dredge

As we arrive in Lanzarote for the third stop on the GWA tour, the crew and riders are excited about the variety of conditions we could see during the competition this week. This stop is focused on Surf-Freestyle with the hope that wave riding will also make an appearance. The location of Costa Teguise is perfect for Wing Foiling, offering stable, strong winds and a fantastic wave formed from the reefs around the bay when everything aligns – fingers crossed it comes together to offer these conditions.

48 of the most accomplished Surf-Freestyle riders have registered for this week’s event and with two events already completed this year, there are plenty of points up for grabs that could throw spanners in the works for new tour leaders by the weekend!

WATCH LIVE HERE!

Silvaplana was only a short few weeks ago and stirred up the rankings from Leucate at the start of the year! Paula Novotna (CZE) gained on her Duotone teammate Nia Suardiaz (ESP). They now sit at joint first on 1870 points with Flora Artzner (FRA) eager to close the gap while she sits on a comfortable 1570. A clip online last week saw Paula land her first backflip! Hopefully, the conditions and waves here in Costa Teguise will give the women more chances to try this in competition.

Over on the men’s side, we have a similar scenario taking place. Balz Müller (CHE) and Christopher Macdonald (USA) are both on 1580 points while Gollito Estredo (VEN) is lurking behind on 1570. Gollito Estredo will be hungry for his first tour win but he’ll need to pull out all the stops to get past a hungry pack of athletes who all want important points!

Most athletes arrived a few days ago so plenty of preparation and water time has been had. Practice makes perfect and it’s all to play for with numerous points up for grabs! The forecast is strong, riders are ready and the plan is to start competition towards the afternoons of each day when the wind is at its best.
