Everything you need to know about the GWA (for now) in 2021

2021– Here’s What You Need to Know

2020 was a tough year for most of us and yet in the midst of it all, the GWA was not only launched into existence on August 16th but we also managed to achieve some incredible feats in 2020.

Here’s what we’re celebrating:

  • Produced 3 international wingfoil events
  • Established competition format
  • Crowned an international champion
  • Saw freestyle winging really take it to the next level!

We would not be here without our partners and our team behind the scenes. Additionally a huge thank you goes out to our founding members:  Airush, Cabrinha, Duotone, Fanatic, F-One, Manera, North, Ocean Rodeo and Slingshot.

We’re stoked to have some awesome events on the schedule in 2021. Read on for everything you need to know.

Competitions and celebrations are in store for the Wingfoil world tour in 2021.

Our current event schedule is as follows (subject to change):

April 28th – May 5th Leucate, France
July 1st-4th Viana do Costello, Portugal
August 12th-15th Silvaplana, Switzerland
October 18th-21st Fortaleza, Brazil
November 3rd-6th Dakhla, Morocco

We’ve compiled a list of Frequently Asked Questions.

Here’s what you need to know about the events:

Q: How can riders register?
A: Riders can register directly through the GWA Wingfoil world tour website on the dedicated event page. Registration will open 6 weeks prior to an event and will close two weeks before the event.

Q: Are events open to the public or are they invitation-only?
A: Events are open to the public however the number of participants in the pro divisions is limited. Selection for pro divisions will be based on international and national rankings plus the GWA and organizer wildcards.

Q: What disciplines will there be?
A: We will run the official disciplines of Surf-Freestyle and Surf-Race in the Pro division at all events. We also plan to run an amateur division in the race format at select events.

Q: Is there prize money?
A: We aim to have prize money of 10.000 Euro at each GWA Wingfoil World Tour Event. This is subject to change and is dependent on the willingness of our sponsors.

If we’ve learned anything in 2020, it’s the need to be flexible. Nothing is set in stone and we appreciate your flexibility as rules, formats and events need to be updated.

Other key dates:

  1. The GWA will be the official partner of the Fair Boot Düsseldorf (the biggest watersports exhibition in the world) from April 17th-25th.  Wingfoiling will be the main focus in the funsport category.
  2. The GWA will be a supporter of the first German Wingfoil Championship taking place close to Kiel from July 29th-August 1st.

Keep checking back for more information as we continue to navigate these challenging times. Make sure you’re signed up for our newsletter.
